How to choose a web designer in Essex in 2026

Most people choosing a web designer are comparing things that are not comparable. A 99 pound package and a 2,500 pound build are not the same product sold at different prices. Here is how to tell the four routes apart, what to ask, and the contract terms that quietly cost the most.

We build websites from Thurrock, and the question we get asked most is not what a website costs. It is how do I tell these people apart?Someone searching "web designer near me" in Essex gets a page of results where a £99 package, a £2,500 build and a £60-a-month subscription all look roughly the same from the outside.

They are not the same product at different prices. They are different products. This is how to tell which one you are actually being sold, and what to ask before you pay anyone.

The four routes, in one paragraph each
  • DIY builder: you do the work. Cheapest in cash, expensive in your time.
  • Budget package: a template filled in for you. Fast and cheap, rarely yours.
  • Freelancer: one person, usually good value, availability is the risk.
  • Studio or agency: built for your business, higher price, someone accountable after launch.

Is it still worth paying someone to build a website in 2026?

For most small businesses, yes, but the reason has changed. Ten years ago you paid someone because building a website was technically hard. It is not any more. Builders and AI tools will produce something that looks acceptable in an afternoon.

What you are paying for now is the part that decides whether the site earns anything: how fast it loads on a phone on a bad signal, whether it is structured so Google and AI assistants can actually read it, whether the enquiry form reaches your inbox reliably, and whether someone fixes it when it breaks at 9pm on a Friday. Those are the things a template does not solve and a busy business owner does not have time to solve either.

The honest exception: if you are pre-revenue, testing an idea, or your customers all come from word of mouth and you just need a page with your number on it, a builder is a perfectly sensible choice. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Website builder or web designer: which do you actually need?

A useful test is to ask what happens on the day you are busiest. If your site needs a change during a week when you have no spare hours, who makes it? With a builder, the answer is you, at 11pm. With a designer on a care plan, you send an email and it is done.

The second test is whether anything on your site needs to work rather than just look right: online booking, payments, a customer login, stock, a quote form that feeds your CRM. The moment there is a moving part, the gap between a builder and a proper build stops being cosmetic.

The four ways to get a website in Essex

1. Do it yourself on a builder

Roughly £10 to £30 a month plus your time. Genuinely fine for a simple presence. The costs that surprise people are the hours you spend, the add-ons that are not in the headline price, and the fact that migrating off later is real work.

2. A budget package from a local operator

Published prices in Essex start around £99 and run to about £349 for a small site. You get something live quickly. The two things to check before you buy are whether you own it afterwards, and what happens to the site if you stop paying the monthly fee. Some of these packages are a rental, and that is a legitimate model as long as you know that is what it is.

3. A freelancer

UK freelancers typically sit between £500 and £3,000 for a bespoke small business site. Often the best value in the market, and you deal directly with the person doing the work. The risk is capacity: one person with flu, a house move or a bigger client can turn a two-week job into two months. Ask directly what their current workload looks like.

4. A small studio or a regional agency

Small studios in Essex publish ranges of roughly £650 to £2,500. Regional agencies quote £2,000 to £8,000 for a comparable site, and the difference is usually account managers, offices and a sales process rather than better engineering. Ask who is actually writing the code, and whether you will ever speak to them.

Ten questions to ask before you pay anyone

  1. Do I own the website and the code when it is finished? Get this in writing.
  2. Whose name is the domain registered in? It should be yours.
  3. What happens to the site if I stop paying you?
  4. Is the price fixed, or is it an estimate that can move?
  5. What is included in the monthly fee, specifically, and what is billed extra?
  6. Who makes changes after launch, and how long does a small edit take?
  7. Can I see three sites you built that are live right now?
  8. Will I have access to the analytics and Search Console accounts?
  9. Who is doing the work, and will I be speaking to them or to a salesperson?
  10. What happens if the site goes down on a Saturday?

You do not need perfect answers to all ten. You need answers that are consistent and given without hesitation. Anyone who gets evasive about ownership or about what the monthly fee covers is telling you something.

The three contract traps

You do not own it

The most common one. The site is built on the provider's platform or account, so leaving means starting again rather than moving. It is not a scam, but it changes the maths completely, because the price you are comparing is not a purchase, it is the first month of an indefinite rental.

The domain is not in your name

Cheap to fix on day one and painful to fix three years later, particularly if the relationship has soured. Your domain is the one asset in this whole arrangement that is genuinely irreplaceable. Check the registrant now.

No access to your own data

If the analytics and Search Console properties belong to the agency, you cannot see whether the work is doing anything, and you cannot take that history with you. Ask to be added as an owner, not a viewer.

How to check someone is any good, in ten minutes

Ask for three live sites they built. Open each one on your phone, on mobile data rather than wifi. If it takes more than about three seconds to become usable, that is your answer, and it is the same test Google applies. Then look at whether the sites are actually different from each other, or the same template with different photos. Finally, email them a question on a weekday and see how long the reply takes. That response time is the one you will live with for the next three years.

Does it matter if they are local?

For the build itself, not much. Good work gets done remotely all the time and geography is not a proxy for quality. It matters for two other things: whether you can sit down with someone before you commit a few thousand pounds, and whether they understand the market you sell into. A studio that has photographed a Grays high street unit and one that has only ever seen it on a map will write about your business differently.

If in-person matters to you, say so early and see whether they offer it or talk you out of it.

Where we sit

For transparency, since this article grades everyone else. We are a small studio in Thurrock. Builds are quoted as a fixed price in writing after a free call, so there is no day rate to creep. We design a homepage preview from your real business before you pay anything. After launch we host it, monitor it, back it up and make your edits for you, from £20 a month for a light care plan up to £350 a month for full management. And the site is yours.

If you want the local market numbers rather than the decision framework, we published what a small business website really costs in Essex, built from prices Essex designers publish themselves. If you want to see what we would do with your business, the free homepage preview is the fastest way to find out, and we cover South Ockendon, Grays and Thurrock and the wider Essex area in person.

The short version

Work out which of the four routes you are buying before you compare prices. Get ownership, the domain and the "what if I stop paying" answer in writing. Open three of their live sites on your phone. Then pick the one that replies quickest, because after launch that is the entire relationship.

Price ranges quoted here are from providers' own published prices, collected across Essex in August 2026. Prices change. Check the current figure before you decide anything.
